Community Guidelines

Last updated: June 30, 2026

1. The Spirit of Lumen Weekly

Lumen Weekly is a space for reflective writing, introspection, personal growth, and meaningful connection through thought.

It is designed for people who want to slow down, write honestly, read deeply, and learn through both their own reflections and the reflections of others.

This is not a space for performance, outrage, popularity contests, image-building, or superficial comparison.

The purpose of these Community Guidelines is to protect the quality, safety, and integrity of the Lumen Weekly space and its platform.

By accepting these Community Guidelines, you agree to comply with all provisions set forth herein and acknowledge that you are solely responsible for any conduct that violates these Community Guidelines.

2. Lumen Weekly Values

Lumen Weekly is built around a small set of values that guide how the platform is designed, moderated, and protected.

We value sincerity: writing that comes from honest attention rather than performance.

We value reflection: the willingness to pause, feel, question, and make meaning through writing.

We value thoughtfulness: the effort to think carefully, question assumptions, notice nuance, and give ideas enough time to become clearer.

We value depth: thoughts that may be quiet, unfinished, vulnerable, complex, or still becoming clear.

We value respect: language that preserves the dignity of other people, even when writing about difficult experiences, disagreement, or pain.

We value curiosity: openness to different inner worlds, perspectives, lives, and ways of making sense of experience.

We value responsibility: the understanding that pseudonymity can create freedom, but not freedom from care, consequence, or accountability.

We value meaningful connection: the kind of recognition that comes from being moved by another person's words, not from attention-seeking or performance.

We value care for language and context: choosing words with awareness that writing can affect others, especially in a shared reflective space.

These values apply to reflections, highlights, pseudonyms, sharing behavior, reports, and all other participation on Lumen Weekly platform.

When something clearly works against these values, even if it does not fit neatly into one prohibited-content category, Lumen Weekly may review, limit, reject, remove, or otherwise moderate it to protect the quality and safety of the space.

3. Write with Sincerity

You are encouraged to write honestly, thoughtfully, and from your own experience.

Your reflections do not need to be perfect, impressive, polished, or "writerly." They should be sincere.

Lumen Weekly exists to support the practice of writing and reflection, not to reward performance.

4. Respect the Reflective Space

Please treat Lumen Weekly as a calm and respectful environment.

Do not use the platform to attack, provoke, shame, manipulate, or dominate others.

Disagreement with ideas may exist, but Lumen Weekly is not designed for public arguments, call-outs, or hostile debate.

5. Pseudonymity with Responsibility

Lumen Weekly encourages pseudonymous participation.

Lumen Weekly does not require you to reveal your real name, photo, or public identity. Your public identity on the platform is based on your chosen pseudonym, not your real-world identity. We do not publicly display your email address.

Choose a pseudonym that allows you to write freely while still respecting the reflective nature of the space. A good pseudonym should feel like a thoughtful public name: it does not need to be formal or serious, but it should not be vulgar, hateful, abusive, misleading, impersonating, sexually explicit, or designed to provoke or humiliate others.

However, pseudonymity is not a license to harm others. You remain solely responsible for your words and actions.

Do not impersonate others, create misleading identities, evade moderation, bypass restrictions, or use pseudonymity to behave in ways you would not stand behind.

Pseudonyms that work against the spirit and values of Lumen Weekly may be rejected, changed, restricted, or removed.

6. What Is Not Allowed

The following are not allowed on Lumen Weekly:

  • hate speech or dehumanizing language;
  • harassment, bullying, threats, or intimidation;
  • personal attacks or humiliation;
  • content that promotes violence, extremism, self-harm, or illegal activity;
  • political, ideological, religious, or commercial propaganda;
  • attempts to recruit, mobilize, or manipulate users for political, ideological, extremist, commercial, or harmful activity;
  • spam, scams, automated content, or irrelevant promotion;
  • sexually explicit content or graphic violence;
  • content that violates another person's privacy;
  • content that infringes intellectual property rights;
  • impersonation or identity deception;
  • deliberate misinformation or manipulative content;
  • repeated behavior that disrupts the reflective purpose of the platform.

7. No Propaganda or Mobilization

Lumen Weekly may include writing about life, values, society, meaning, identity, uncertainty, and personal beliefs.

However, the platform must not be used for propaganda, recruitment, manipulation, coordinated campaigning, or mobilization of users toward political, ideological, extremist, commercial, or harmful goals.

Personal reflection is welcome. Manipulative persuasion is not.

8. Respect Other People's Writing

Other users' reflections belong to them.

You may read, appreciate, learn from, and be inspired by what others write.

You may use Lumen Weekly-supported features such as Inspire, Follow, or Share where available.

You may not copy, repost, publicly screenshot, present as your own, commercially exploit, or distribute another person's writing outside the intended Lumen Weekly experience.

If a reflection moves you, share it with care through the platform-supported preview or link where available, thereby sharing only limited content to the public in accordance with the Terms of Use and these Community Guidelines. Do not remove another person's words from their intended context or treat them as your own.

Misusing another user's writing may lead to temporary or permanent loss of access to Lumen Weekly.

9. Sharing with Care

Published reflections are intended to be discoverable inside Lumen Weekly.

Inside Lumen Weekly, logged-in users may open and read published reflections in full.

If a published reflection is shared outside the platform, only a limited preview may be visible to people who are not logged in, such as the theme, pseudonym, selected highlight, context, and a call to action.

To read the full reflection, a person needs to create an account or log in.

Sharing should support discovery, reflection, and respect — not exposure, ridicule, appropriation, or misuse.

10. Highlights

A highlight is the short part of a reflection selected or edited by the author for discovery.

Highlights may appear in Discover and may appear as a public preview when a reflection is shared outside Lumen Weekly.

Choose your highlight carefully. Do not include anything in your highlight that you are not comfortable being visible beyond the immediate reading context.

11. Inspire Is Not a Popularity Contest

The Inspire feature exists to let someone know that their reflection moved, helped, or inspired you.

It is not a ranking system, a competition, or a measure of personal worth.

Use Inspire sincerely.

12. Following Authors

You may follow authors whose writing you often find meaningful or inspiring.

Following is intended to help users reconnect with voices they value. It should not be used for harassment, monitoring, pressure, or unwanted attention.

13. Reporting Content

If you see content that appears harmful, abusive, hateful, manipulative, spammy, or inconsistent with these Guidelines, you may report it.

Reports help us protect the community, but reporting does not automatically mean that content will be removed.

We review reports in context and may take action when appropriate.

14. Moderation, Rejections, and Consequences

Lumen Weekly may moderate, approve, reject, hide, remove, or limit visibility of content that violates these Guidelines, the Terms of Use, applicable law, or the spirit and purpose of the platform.

Reflections may be rejected before publication or removed after publication if they do not meet these Guidelines or the Terms of Use.

If a reflection is rejected, you may be able to revise and resubmit it, depending on the issue and the current platform functionality.

Repeated rejected submissions, attempts to resubmit substantially similar violating content, attempts to bypass moderation, or patterns of misuse may lead to temporary publishing limits, feature restrictions, suspension, or permanent loss of access to Lumen Weekly.

Depending on the situation, consequences may include:

  • a warning;
  • removal or rejection of content;
  • temporary publishing limits;
  • temporary restriction of features;
  • temporary suspension;
  • account deactivation;
  • permanent account termination or ban;
  • other appropriate action to protect the platform and its users.

Serious violations may result in immediate suspension or termination.

15. Automated and AI-Assisted Review

Lumen Weekly may use human review, automated tools, AI-assisted tools, or a combination of these to support moderation, safety, translation, and quality review.

These tools help protect the space, but moderation decisions may still involve context and judgment.

16. A Note on Difficult Topics

Lumen Weekly may invite reflection on deep or sensitive themes.

You may write about sadness, uncertainty, fear, loss, faith, identity, mistakes, change, hope, or personal struggle.

Please do so with care for yourself and others.

Do not use Lumen Weekly as a substitute for professional support. If you are in crisis or immediate danger, please contact local emergency services or an appropriate crisis support service.

17. The Kind of Space We Are Building

Lumen Weekly is built around a simple idea:

Writing can help us understand ourselves. Reading others' writing can help us understand the human experience more deeply.

Please help us keep this space thoughtful, safe, sincere, and worthy of the trust people place in it.
